Erectile Dysfunction-More than Just Pejorative Secret
June 15, 2007
Afflicting nearly 30 per cent of men aged over 40, erectile dysfunction defined as an unrelenting inability to attain and maintain an erection is just not a mere thwarting secret. In spite of breathing under its agony, very few dare to admit it and are unaware of the fact that erectile dysfunction could be an indication of severe disease.
“International Men's Health Week was the perfect event to aware men about the fact that it’s just not only sex life that could be on stake if the disease haunts their health, but the extent of erectile dysfunction is more far and wide”, said Associate Prof Doug Lording of the Melbourne Andrology Centre at Cabrini Hospital..
"It is now been acknowledged that all health conditions which result heart disease, such as diabetes, high blood pressure , high cholesterol, obesity and smoking have a link with erectile dysfunction," Lording alleged.
"Even men who are not seeking any medicinal treatment to reinstate sexual power must consult their local doctor with respect to this problem in order to get suitable medical help."
Drugs and mental problems like anxiety for performance, relationship complexities, strain and depression also affect a man's capability to attain and maintain an erection.
But all these factors are only few of the numerous potential causes responsible for the onset of erectile dysfunction.
Under the survey organized by men's reproductive health group Andrology Australia in 2004, one in five men aged over 40 were found suffering from impotence or erectile dysfunction.
The Andrology Australia survey also revealed that despite of 80 per cent of men having visited their GP in the initial 12 months, most men with erectile dysfunction were found incapable of discussing the disease with their doctor.
Prof Lording said that men's outlook towards their own health has changed, but still they and their doctors require support to discuss such problems.
Andrology Australia chief executive Dr Carol Holden also agreed with the fact that awareness about men's health has grown and the number of organizations backing up International Men’s Health Week has trebled in last two years. |
