Second opinion: Changing partners for the golden years

By Dr. Murray Feingold / Correspondent

Advances in medicine have resulted in people living a much longer, healthier and better life.

Much of this can be attributed to newer medications, such as statin drugs like Lipitor and Zocor, along with better high-blood pressure medications and heart bypass and transplant surgery. Improved nutrition and more exercise are also helpful.

Throw Viagra into the mix and you have 70-year-olds feeling and thinking like 40-year-olds.

But there appears to be another byproduct of these advances, and that is perhaps not one you would have predicted.

There has been a 10 percent increase in the divorce rate of people 65 years of age and older.

It has been suggested this increase can be due, at least in part, to the oldsters feeling so good and vibrant.

Some of these people believe they have many more years to live and they want to live these remaining years differently than they are at the present time.

Frequently, this means not with the same spouse.

Both men and women are initiating the divorce. One mate may be happy sitting at home watching television, while the other has the energy and interest to travel and see the world.

Their interests may now be different, or they may have always been different, and while they're feeling good, they want to pursue them, without each other.

In the past, one of the spouses dutifully did what the other wanted. Now it is time for this to change.

A generation ago, the only rocking 70-year-olds did was in their rocking chairs. Today, thanks to medical advances, they are rocking and rolling to a different tune, but not always with each other.
