Peyronie's disease is detected when there is a formation
of hardened tissue in the penis that causes pain, curvature,
and distortion, usually during the time of erection. The
penis is the male organ for reproduction and urination.
The disease affects the erectile tissue in penis. There
are two columns of erectile tissue; these are the corpora
cavernosa, and the corpus spongiosum. In this disease, there
is a formation of a dense and fibrous scar tissue called
plaque in the tunica albuginea. The disease has been found
to affect the normal sexual performance. It may cause Erectile
Dysfunction.
Causes and risk factors of Peyronie's
People do not know the causes of Peyronie's but there have
been some findings that give us an insight to the problem.
The disease may be caused due to:
- Trauma to the penis that may have been caused due
to an invasive penile procedure and extremely vigorous sexual
activity.
- Autoimmune disorder and collagen abnormality: Men's
immune system may not function properly in many cases. Abnormality
in connective tissue may also be one of the causes.
- Inherited abnormality: there have been cases in this
disease where people have suffered due to inherited abnormality
of human leukocyte antigen B27, suggesting a genetic link.
It has been found that people have suffered due to hereditary
reasons. About 30% of the patients with Peyronie's disease also develop hardened tissue in some other parts of body,
such as hand or foot.
- Diabetes and Vascular cause: thorough examination
of the disease has resulted in new findings. It has been
found that there is inflammation of blood vessels, suggesting
the condition may be due to vascular cause. Diabetes, which
often leads to blood vessel disease, could also be considered
a possible cause.
- Medications: blood pressure and heart medications
may cause Peyronie's disease in men. So a doctor's advise
is needed in patients suffering from the disease.
Symptoms and Signs
Peyronie's disease may be very serious at times because
it develops rapidly. There are some symptoms that reveal
the existence of the problem in a patient. These are:
- Change in the shape of penis.
- Curve in penis during erection.
- Pain in penis during erection.
- Trace of hardened tissue in penis
- Inability to have an erection.
Peyronie's disease is related to sexual health of men.
It is capable of developing rapidly or over time. So you
must be in touch with a doctor to have proper medication
and care. Though it affects mainly people in the age group
of 45-60, but there are some cases where young people have
also reported the problem. The prevalence of the disease
may be higher because people suffering from the disease
tend to hide their problem by ignoring some minor symptoms
of the disease. The disease is a potential carrier of erectile
dysfunction, so medication in the form of Viagra can be
really helpful in curing the disease.
