Sildenafil citrate, as Viagra is scientifically known, acts by inhibiting an enzyme that blocks the blood supply to the penis. This consequently increases the supply and leads to erection.
When a man gets sexually excited,the brain sends an impulse to the penis telling the penis to relax. This is caused by physical or mental stimulation. The arteries in the penis respond and widen. This allows more blood to flow into the penis. The veins that carry blood away from the penis get compressed. This restricts the blood flow out of the penis. More blood flows in. And less flows out. This makes the penis larger and causes an erection.
After Viagra's run in the market worldwide, the drug's effectiveness is not disputed and is bound to have a big impact. But there's a flipside. Sildenafil can be fatal for people on nitrates and those with cardio-vascular problems. Sildenafil is the primary ingredient which goes into the making of Viagra. If taken with nitrates, Sildenafil reduces the patients' blood pressure dramatically. Possible temporary side-effects are headache and nausea. Side-effects notwithstanding, the pharmaceutical companies are upbeat. It's a blockbuster drug.
