With the launch of Viagra, and its immediate arrest of erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence in common parlance not much has been written about the causes of ED. Erectile Dysfunction occurs when there is a lack of blood flow to the penis. This means that a man can have trouble getting and keeping an erection long enough to have sex. There is no one factor which can be pinpointed as the causes of E.D.
Experts believe that approximately 80% of all ED cases stem from physical (organic) disorders, although psychological disorders can also lead to ED. Most often, multiple factors contribute to the condition.
Physical Causes
Vascular Diseases: heart disease or stroke, hypertension (high blood pressure) and high cholesterol.
Diabetes: Any of several metabolic disorders marked by excessive discharge of urine and persistent thirst, especially one of the two types of diabetes mellitus.
Nerve Disease: Neurological conditions include spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and nerve degeneration sometimes caused by diabetes or alcoholism.
Hormonal Problems: Low levels of the male hormone testosterone, which may affect the desire for sex.
Surgery: Surgery for colon, rectal or prostate cancer and even radiation therapy in the pelvic area can damage nerves and blood vessels.
Trauma: Injuries to the spinal cord or pelvic fractures.
Depending on your Doctor several different treatment options for ED are available.
Oral Medication: Oral medications such as Viagra are the most common treatment for Erectile Dysfunction.
Sex Counseling/Sex Therapy: Consulting with a trained counselor, psychiatrist or psychologist may help you identify, understand and cope with sexual concerns.
Penile Injection Therapy: Medication that increases blood flow in the penis is injected by the patient into the side of the penis shortly before sexual activity.
Vacuum Therapy: This procedure uses a vacuum device to cause blood to flow into the penis and a constriction ring at the base of the penis to maintain the erection.
Penile Implant Surgery: An option for men with ED for whom other treatments have been unsuccessful. This is a device that is surgically inserted into the penis and used when there is a desire for sexual intercourse.
